The Day Fletcher Caught O’Neill’s Eye?

Gary Engel31 - Jul - 2012

December 4th, 2011 Sunderland’s visit to Molineux could go down as a real game changer for the Black Cats. Martin O’Neill was officially installed as manager but was in the stands as his new charges took to the field, ironically against a former Sunderland manager.  However, could there have been a degree of admiration and a partnership formed after Steven Fletcher’s second-half performance? The lively Fletcher proved a constant threat, the opposite of any Sunderland strikers that day.

Fletcher’s work rate and movement that day were actually more impressive than I had previously given him credit for. That spark seemed to catch O’Neill’s eye, and there have been rumours linking us with the Wolves forward for some months now.

I still feel Fletcher has a way to go; he must stay fit to improve his play and goal record. Martin O’Neill is the ultimate master motivator if the player wants to work he will get another level of performance out of him.

Now we learn the worst kept secret in North East football, Sunderland have firmed up their interest in Steven Fletcher and made a £10million bid. It is unlikely to be enough with interest from several other Premier League clubs watching the situation. However, there should be nothing for Sunderland to really fear. The Black Cats should still be the best option for Steven Fletcher.
