Man places £44,000 bet on Liverpool winning league

Call him delusional, stupid, confident, faithful, or whatever…but according to William Hill somebody has placed a £44,000 bet on Liverpool winning the Premier League this season. The betting firm said it’s the biggest wager placed so far for the upcoming season and the odds for it were 25/1. If the Reds manage to win the league the man will win a total of £777,333.33. Coming in second would be a bit of a disappointment for him, but he’d still walk away with £205,333.33, which is about a week’s wages for some of today’s footballers.

William Hill said the man was in his mid-30s and after he placed the huge bet at 25/1, the odds on Liverpool taking the title were slashed down to 16/1. Joe Crilly, who is a spokesperson for William Hill, said,  "The football has gone largely unnoticed while the Olympics has been going on although there has been a steady stream of bets on Liverpool winning the title, mainly from the North West."

He added "There has not been that much movement in or out of Anfield this summer but despite this, Liverpool now constitute around 40 per cent of all stakes that we have taken on the Premier League winner market."

The biggest move at Anfield was obviously Brendan Rodgers taking over from Kenny Dalglish and the signing of Fabio Borini. Joe Allen might be the next signing, but Daniel Agger could be sold and Craig Bellamy is likely to return to Cardiff. Luis suarez also signed an extension. Andy Carroll’s immediate future is still in the air, but hopefully Rodgers will be keeping him.
