Spurs Giovani Dos Santos injured during Olympics

Ian Stewart Palmer10 - Aug - 2012

My main reason for watching the Olympic men’s football final between Brazil and Mexico was to watch Spurs’ playmaker Giovani dos Santos in action for the Mexicans. Unfortunately for me and more so for him, Dos Santos will have to watch the game from the sidelines due to a knee injury. Mexico’s manager Luis Fernando Tena confirmed the news 24 hours before the kickoff.

He said Dos Santos doesn’t have a serious problem, but its’ bad enough that it’s going to make him miss the gold-medal showdown. He added that the player lives and plays in London and was dreaming of being to help Mexico earn a gold medal at Wembley, but his dream has been shattered.

It’s believed that the 23-year-old Dos Santos will be out of action for about two weeks and he’ll be reporting back to Spurs on Monday Aug. 13 to begin rehabilitation on his knee. Mexico has made it to the Olympic final for the first time and Dos Santos has been a big part of the team’s success with three goals. The best previous finish for Mexico was in1968 when they came in fourth at home in Mexico City.

Dos Santos can’t seem to catch a break in England. He’s an immensely talented player and a key ingredient on the Mexican team. However, formers Spurs boss Harry Redknapp hardly used him at all while he was in charge. Dos Santos was making a name for himself during the Olympics and was hoping he’d catch the eye of new manage Andre Villas-Boas

I’ve seen thousands of footballers over the years, but to me, Dos Santos sticks out as there’s something special in the way he plays the game. Hopefully he’ll heal quickly and gain a spot in AVB’s starting 11. I know he has to earn it, but it’s about time he caught a break.
