A famous Spanish sports newspaper is claiming today that André Villas-Boas wants to take Sergi Roberto to White Hart Lane next season. The young Spanish talent has impressed Tottenham’s manager and with several contenders for Barcelona's first team, it will be hard for him to secure a starting spot there.

Sergi Roberto is a versatile centre midfielder that can embrace several roles at the centre of the field. He can play as a deep playmaker, but he also can play further up front as an advanced playmaker. This season, Sergi Roberto made almost 20 appearances for Barcelona B and 5 appearances for Barcelona’s first squad. Some Spanish football pundits claim that he is the new Xavi and that it won’t take very long before he can claim his place with Barcelona’s first team.

Last week, the same Spanish newspaper that is claiming today that Sergi Roberto is on Tottenham’s shortlist, reported that André Villas-Boas visited Barcelona’s academy ‘La Masia’ in order to have a closer look at some of Barcelona’s young talents.

Still according to the same newspaper, Barcelona’s managerial team have informed the player’s agent that they would like Sergi Roberto to be part of the main team next season, however, they have also stated that he would act as a backup player to some of the team’s midfield stars. Nevertheless, his agent didn’t seem very impressed with the offer and he might be considering a move to some other top quality team.

André Villas-Boas is pretty good at scouting young talented players and I am pretty sure that he will try to convince Sergi Roberto that Tottenham is a perfect choice for his future.

Sergi Roberto might not be the only player that André Villas-Boas is interested in. The media are claiming that there are several youngsters at Barcelona B that have impressed the Portuguese manager.

Sergi Roberto would be a great catch for the Spurs next season. He is only 21 years old, he was and still is a regular choice for Spain Youth Squads and I am sure that in the near future he will also be part of the Spanish National Team.

In brief, I believe that André Villas-Boas has a pretty good idea of how he wants Tottenham to look in the near future and I believe that young players like Sergi Roberto will have a major role in building a strong team for the future.
