With one game left to play in the 2011-2012 Premier League season, it all seemed that Manchester City were the clear favorites to walk away with the title just after beating Manchester United a few weeks back.
It had all the ingredients needed to make sure that City won this title. They were at home, playing QPR, who is fighting the relegation battle, they had a momentum going their way, and United was away to Sunderland. All that City needed was a goal. Seems simple enough, right?
Well, not really. This last sunday of Premier League action for this season showed us why this league is the best league in the world. It was full of heartbreak, drama, and joy.
The two games that everyone was looking forward to this sunday were clearly the two games that involved the clubs from Manchester.
Not only was the title on the line, but the survival of QPR was also up at stakes. United needed to win, and hoped that QPR would manage to at least get a point from the Eithad. On the other hand, all that City needed to do was win.
After 20 minutes, United took the lead at the Stadium of Light, and they managed to add pressure to a City side that was struggling to find any spaces, but right before the half City managed to take the lead from a Zabaleta shot that slipped trough Kenny's hands.
The Eithad was electric until QPR took a 2-1 in the second half. It seemed that it was going to be one of those days that only this beatiful sport called football has where the small team ends up ruining the party for the big team.
Well it did end up being one of those days that only football seems to have, but for other reasons. Something magical happened out on the pitch. Something that I'm sure left many of us that love this game speechless.
It was the best finish not only for a game, but the best finish for a title race in the history of the game as well. No one could have written a better ending than this.
A moment that only a true football fan can enjoy. It was the pure five seconds of ecstasy that make this a special sport. It was the five seconds that changed those tears of pain and anguish into the tears that defined joy.
When it all seemed lost for City, when it seemed that they were going to let yet another title slip out of their hands, two heroes managed to make sure that didn't happen.
With only 5 minutes left to play on the added time, the Blue Moon Raised once again in the City of Manchester and interrupted the celebration of Manchester United.
If there were ever to be a movie-like ending to a Premier League season, it happened today right before our eyes when Edin Dzeko and Sergio Agüero scored the two most important goals in the history of Manchester City. Two goals in the last minutes that awarded City the title.
Two goals that made one half of Manchester cry of joy, and the other half cry of pain.
The football gods rewarded everyone who loves football with a tremendous display of football, passion, and desire.
United were not the only team that suffered this last sunday. Teams like Bolton who were relegated, and will have to play Championship football next season found out just how cruel this sport can be.
This game takes so much from us. It brings so much pain. It so unfair and cruel sometimes, but today it showed us why we love this game. Because through all the hard times that we have all been trough football has always been there for us, and with moments like the one today it has brought joy back onto our lives.
Thank you to all the Premier League teams that have made us cry, yell, and laugh this season. We will all be here waiting for you next season to experience all that again for we all love you.
Congratulations to Manchester City for winning the Premier League title. The Blue Moon raised once again. The question now is how long will this night last, and how long will the nightmare last for Manchester United?
