Swansea and Liverpool at War over Joe Allen?

Nick Melia18 - Jul - 2012

The rage continues. Swansea fans have had about enough of the Merseyside club as not only have they poached their manager, they're looking to buy possibly their greatest prospect in young Joe Allen. All talk of a clause preventing Brendan raiding his former club looks blown out of the water, as Liverpool hang imperiously over South Wales to yet again infuriate the Jack Army.

Why does a club looking for a top 4 finish want Joe Allen? Many, many reasons - including him being the 9th most accurate passer in all of Europe with 91.2%. That puts him in a league containing Xavi, Busquets, Nasri and team-mate Leon Britton, and superior to other midfield greats such as Yaya Toure, Andrea Pirlo and Andres Iniesta.

Despite his attacking ability and misleading height - only 5ft 6 - he makes a tremendous defensive contribution and won an astonishing 82 tackles this season - the most for any Premier League midfielder in all of 11/12, eclipsing the likes of Scott Parker, Fellaini, Yaya Toure and Alex Song. With great positional nous and an eye for a killer pass, Brendan Rodgers desperately wants him at the Kop, even asking for Swansea to name their price.

Allen may not want to leave With Liverpool shelling out upwards of £15m for Henderson last summer, Swansea are expected to ask for more than that as either a deterrent, or a way to get the maximum amount if he is destined for Anfield. Even if an agreement is reached by the two clubs,
Allen may not want to leave, especially as he had been at the club since the tender age of just 9 - thirteen years in total.

Swans fans will have to wait and see if chairman Huw Jenkins and manager Michael Laudrup can keep their grasp on their hot prospect, while Liverpool faithful are not sure if he is really the man to feature for them in the club's new era. But I have no doubt in my mind - he's one to watch, whatever colour he's wearing.
