The Joe Allen saga still goes on and with the newspapers throwing up yet more uncertainty on the talented 22 year old, many Swansea and even Liverpool fans are hopeful that a deal is not struck. Haunted by signings of the likes of Adam, Carroll, Henderson and Downing, many of the Kop faithful seem reluctant to splash out £15m on someone who has had only 1 season in the Premier League.
However Swansea may have no choice but to sell. A clause in his contract means he is allowed to leave for £15m if one of the top 5 clubs make the bid. That includes the Merseyside outfit - however a club not being in that top 5 could snatch him for as little as £10m. Liverpool are said to have had a £12.5m bid rejected by the Welsh club, with the deal thought to include young Jonjo Shelvey on loan.
There is no doubt of Allen's class - with him being the 9th most accurate passer in all of Europe, and the top tackler in midfield in all the Premier League. His Olympics performances have further showcased his talent - and have rumoured to alert Tottenham to the midfield maestro.
But someone else in on Rodgers' radar - his rock in central defence last season, and Allen's fellow Wales international, Ashley Williams. After inspired performances on the pitch during a campaign that culminated in a 11th place finish, the 27 year old defender has been singled out to replace Daniel Agger if he leaves to Manchester City. With Liverpool owners FSG likely to sell if they receive a large bid, Rodgers is thought to deem Williams as a good enough replacement.
But not only Liverpool are monitoring the Swansea situation. Winger Scott Sinclair - who is in the final year of his contract - is thought to be targeted by Manchester City, who are looking for a cheap addition to their squad after years of massive spending. With Swansea likely to request Adam Johnson to go the other way, a deal beneficial for both clubs could be struck. Who knows?
